CSA Week 9
Harvest dinner RSVP open!

Over here August is being welcomed with an embrace and huge armloads of vegetables. Last week while harvesting for market, I felt reminded of how incredibly abundant this time of year is. The summer crops are weighed down with sets of fruit, the winter squash are beginning to find color, cucumbers & zucchini are really showing off, fall crops are (so far) ahead of schedule, & garlic is almost nearly sorted.
Around this time, plantings slow down. I’ve just finished seeding one of the last rounds of field crops… turnips, spinach, cilantro, dill, lettuce mix, spicy mix, kale mix, and radishes. This month the greenhouse will host trays for early winter meals (spinach, radicchio, endive, salanova, kale). But mostly, right now we are focused on maintenance & harvest schedules. For instance, tomatoes must be harvested at least two times per week. We have landed on a Monday, Thursday schedule so that it does not disrupt the flow of CSA & market harvest days. Within the next couple of weeks, we can expect to spend over 4 hours harvesting tomatoes in the hoophouses and the fields on either of those afternoons. Trays are adorned with shades of yellow, orange, pink, indigo, red, & green tomato globes. A generous, beautiful sight to behold.
