The sun set on Saturday as some dearest companions & I filled big jars with blueberries. The cedar waxwings were in celebration for the gift. With the ripening of these bushes I think of my dad, who long ago promised to stock my life with blueberries & if I continue to love the berry, I know he always will. He is a routined & simple person. This means I know that around this time of year, he will begin the day with a pb&blueberry toast.
Sammie is one of my oldest friends; she’s a friend where a welcome embrace parallels a deep breath, lying in a lush patch of clover rest. My dad also taught her that toast with peanut butter, honey, & an overflow of blueberries makes the day brighter. And so we begin our days this week with this intertwinement. And the toast we all hold close is just one thread to tug.
The memories I have with blueberries are vast. My sweet, sweet mom used to take my siblings & I to the beach in the mornings during blueberry season. After a dip we would have a breakfast picnic….. rice krispies, milk, & a handful of blueberries. I spend a lot of time wondering what my mom was thinking about during moments like this. Wondering what she was up to or reading or enamored with. History has always enthralled me, which of course includes the places & people that orbit my little world.
Within the overwhelming stress of the season, I know to relish in these tender generosities. I give thanks to the farmers that take care. To the fruits of July. To the minds & roots & stories that weave webs around the indigo flesh of the blueberry.

What is Home?
What is home: it is the shade of trees on my way to school    before they were uprooted. It is my grandparents’ black-and-white wedding     photo before the walls crumbled. It is my uncle’s prayer rug, where dozens of ants   slept on wintry nights, before it was looted and    put in a museum. It is the oven my mother used to bake bread and    roast chicken before a bomb reduced our house    to ashes. It is the café where I watched football matches   and played— My child stops me: Can a four-letter word hold   all of these?Â
