CSA Week 2

Last Night the Rain Spoke To Me
By Mary OliverLast night the rain spoke to me slowly, saying,
what joy to come falling out of the brisk cloud, to be happy again
in a new way on the earth! That’s what it said as it dropped,
smelling of iron, and vanished like a dream of the ocean into the branches
and the grass below. Then it was over. The sky cleared. I was standing
under a tree. The tree was a tree with happy leaves, and I was myself,
and there were stars in the sky that were also themselves at the moment, at which moment
my right hand was holding my left hand which was holding the tree which was filled with stars
and the soft rain— imagine! imagine! the wild and wondrous journeys still to be ours.
Yesterday, a group of CSA members joined the farm crew to plant sweet potatoes. Michelle & I spent Friday afternoon removing a truly incredible network of grass rhizomes. We believe the straw that we laid in the field last year had a significant amount of weed seeds in it, allowing for opportunistic growth this spring. After weeds were cleared, amendments were spread, beds were tilled, drip irrigation & landscape fabric was laid. All in preparation for hundreds of sweet potato slips to be tucked in. The slips look like little sticks with a bit of root & a leaf or two. They look quite unassuming & I find it amazing that in a few months, we will be digging up fully grown sweet potatoes. Once the task was completed, we sat down in gratitude for a job well done & a shared meal.
This time of year can feel a bit jarring, as the task list lengthens, planting schedules tighten, weeds grow rapidly, harvest days become more frequent. Finishing out our big plantings with helping hands felt wonderful. A reminder to us that the farm is a community endeavor <3
