CSA Week 17

Seasonal eating reaches peak creativity & possibility in September. Tomato harvests overlap with storage sweeties…. the ripened honeynut squash, the long awaited leek, big winter beets, fall brassicas. After a walk through the field there is seemingly no salad that cannot be summoned up in the kitchen. Yesterday, lunch was a warming, herby golden chicken curry & dinner was a tomato & pear bruschetta. I LOVE this fleeting moment in time every year.
We look longingly towards the few months of snow-covered rest, but for now, the harvest days are the longest that they will be all year. Greens are washed, dried, and bagged under a construction light hours after sunset. The fields of storage are ready to be bulk harvested & packed away in the cooler. We are grateful that frost has held off. For many seasons, growers & animals alike have known these shortening days, autumn’s welcome, to be that of bounty & preparation. As October’s harvest moon approaches, I find comfort & a sense of companionship in this.
The Harvest Moon
It is the Harvest Moon! On gilded vanes
And roofs of villages, on woodland crests
And their aerial neighborhoods of nests
Deserted, on the curtained window-panes
Of rooms where children sleep, on country lanes
And harvest-fields, its mystic splendor rests!
Gone are the birds that were our summer guests,
With the last sheaves return the laboring wains!
All things are symbols: the external shows
Of Nature have their image in the mind,
As flowers and fruits and falling of the leaves;
The song-birds leave us at the summer’s close,
Only the empty nests are left behind,
And pipings of the quail among the sheaves.
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

BULK ORDERS! ROMAS GALORE!
Ok I ended the bulk orders too soon! We have SO MANY SAUCE TOMS!!!! If you would like to purchase bulk tomatoes, please email stillwindfarm@proton.me BEFORE pickup so that we can prepare your pre-order. We will let you know if we sell out of flats upon reaching out.
Details:
Tomatoes - sold as flats for $35 (approx $2.50 / lb aka half off)
Recipe ideas:
Canned crushed tomatoes… this is how I process tomatoes because crushed tomatoes are very flexible for future recipes & it is more efficient than preparing multiple recipes (but sauces, ketchup, chutneys, salsas are fun to make as well!!!)
