The celestial event, the autumn equinox, carried us through yesterday. The equilibrium of sunlight & moonlight shares with us a tender passage into the cooler months ahead. With each solstice, equinox, season’s movement, our home has cultivated personal & shared traditions that bring us closer to all that we are devoted to. For this one, we canoed a winding creek with friends, our light chatter flushing wood ducks from their cattail & coreopsis hideaways, until we came upon a vast corner of Wabasis Lake. At the start of our float, the month’s drought broke with a steady, gentle sprinkle. Raindrops on the lily pads, sometimes gratitude feels so hugely quiet.
The autumnal equinox comes at a time of reflection & release, as we done much of what we are able for the season. We remain disclipined in our work of fall’s harvest while witnessing the fields become barren soil, golden weeds, glimmers of green that are to be covered with frost cloth. As of today, the greenhouse has been nearly emptied for the first time since March. All of the trellising equipment, landscape fabric, t-posts, field irrigation, have begun to trickle back in for organizing, hopefully better each fall than the last. We have spent all season gathering, bouncing around ideas for off-season improvements… such as re-configuring large parts of the deer fence for more accessible tractor usage or writing SOPs that will aid in collective understanding & ease of task. Channeling the noted disease pressure, cover crop aspirations, spacial constraints, seasonal sucesses, & grief of crop losses into a hopeful crop planning endeavor. All in due time.
So yesterday, the raindrops fed the field salads as we read by the fire, made a root vegetable soup, used the soup’s vegetable scraps to simmer a broth, & walked our most common walk, to the corner of the nearby corn field, just before an earlier sunfall.
