While I write this I can overhear Brian & our dear friend chat tomato canning details across the yard. They are working on timing a break in the water baths so that we can take a dip in the lake, eat a slice of pie. A green heron recently landed on a stump near my sitting spot & has since been wandering the water’s edge, surrounded by a collection of wetland grasses & cattails. I have been wearing a wool sweater in the shade all day. I feel September in the air. The smell is so particular. The grasses in the field are browning & the onions are flopping their tops as if to say, please bring us in for the winter. In the summer, we eat with the movement of the sun. We have just begun to notice that we are sitting down for dinner earlier.
I work desperately to seed & plant the last of the field’s fall crops before we have moved too far into September. Last week this included a succession of greens (which we have had a shortage of this year, apologies), radishes, turnips, cilantro, dill. The buckwheat is flowering now, meaning the beds will soon be planted with winter chard & collards. This month is exhausting, but I cherish the days in a unique, hopeful sort of way.
