CSA Week 1

This week the greenhouse will be almost entirely emptied of summer crops, the space replaced with freshly seeded trays of fall brassicas. The crew has been planting planting planting, irrigating, compost spreading, weeding, planting. Field tomatoes, field peppers, winter squash, watermelon, hoophouse basil, & assorted flowers remain. Once this list is complete, we turn our attention to trellising & catching up on the fresh flush of weeds that is emerging.
Personally, I am moving at the pace of a three month old, which is so free & uncontrolled. Everyday I talk about the blooming flowers, show Ansel the fresh leaves, & with one hand, harvest for meals. I have been enamored with the growth of the watermelon seedlings because at their harvest, we will be sharing with our wee one. Naturally, I am now conjoining the movement of the season with that of infanthood. But for my entire adult life, I have marked the passage of time in seasons. What needs to be seeded in March in order to be shared around the dinner table in July. What should be planted in September so that salad still greets us in January. I find it hopeful to look forward in this way, knowing that there is tending to do before the gratifying end. A shared meal with the field’s bounty releases the challenge of the work.
Much of what is in the CSA this week was seeded in February or March, when we were bundled up & awaiting glimmers of sunshine. In the weeks since, the carrots have been thinned & weeded, as the lettuce has grown they have had to share space with the incoming tomato plants, an understory cover crop has been sown in the kale beds. The list could continue. In all, there are thousands of plants that have been given hours of attention. We are looking forward to the harvest greeting your homes.
EBT ONLINE IS UP! Tell your friends!
Finally! CSA shares can now be paid for online with a Bridge Card! Weekly payments are now so very simple & shares are subsidized by 80% ……. so standard $35 shares are just $7. Incredible.
We are so excited about this offering, but since the process to become certified for online sales took longer than expected, we haven’t been able to spread the word until very recently. If you know a friend, loved one, acquaintance that may be interested in a CSA share we’d love for you to let them know!
